What is Pilonidal sinus ?

A pilonidal sinus is a small tunnel or tract under the skin that often contains hair, debris, and skin. It typically occurs in the natal cleft (the groove between the buttocks) near the tailbone (coccyx). It can become infected and form an abscess, leading to pain, swelling, and pus drainage.

Causes:

Treatment Options:

  • Friction, prolonged sitting, and poor hygiene can contribute.
  • Advancement flap surgery : Used for complex or high fistulas.
  • More common in young adult males, people with coarse body hair, and those who sit for long periods (e.g. truck drivers).muscles.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and swelling near the tailbone
  • Redness and tenderness
  • Pus or blood drainage from a small opening
  • Foul odor
  • Fever (if infected)
